Ega Ships Bauxite Cargo Using Lng Fuelled Ship

EGA Achieves Historic Milestone with World's First LNG-Fueled Bauxite Shipment

Innovative Capesize Ship Reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions Significantly

Abu Dhabi, UAE - August 5, 2024 - Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the world's largest premium aluminum producer, today announced a historic milestone in the aluminum industry. The company successfully shipped bauxite, the raw material for aluminum production, using a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled capesize ship. The shipment represents a major step forward in EGA's commitment to sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The shipment, which departed from Guinea and is bound for EGA's Al Taweelah alumina refinery in the UAE, is being transported on the "Ubuntu Empathy," an LNG dual-fueled vessel operated by Cargill. The use of LNG as fuel significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fuels, aligning with EGA's goal of reducing its carbon footprint.

Benefits of LNG Fuel for Bauxite Shipment

Capesize ships are among the largest bulk cargo carriers in the world, capable of transporting up to 300,000 tons of cargo. By utilizing LNG as fuel, EGA can achieve up to 28 percent lower greenhouse gas emissions on a tank-to-tank basis. This reduction contributes to the company's overall sustainability strategy and supports the global efforts to combat climate change.

Commenting on the achievement, Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, said, "This historic shipment marks a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainable aluminum production. By embracing innovative solutions such as LNG-fueled vessels, we are not only reducing our environmental impact but also setting an example for the industry."

EGA's Sustainability Commitment

EGA is committed to sustainability throughout its operations. The company has set a target of reducing its carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2030. In addition to using LNG-fueled ships, EGA is also exploring other initiatives such as renewable energy and carbon capture and storage. The company's sustainability efforts have been recognized globally, with EGA being the first aluminum producer in the Middle East to receive the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard certification.

The successful shipment of bauxite using an LNG-fueled capesize ship is a testament to EGA's innovation and commitment to sustainability. The company continues to strive for a greener, more sustainable aluminum industry, working towards a future where aluminum meets the needs of society without compromising the environment.
